What is West Virginia Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC)?

The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children - better known as the WIC program - provides supplemental foods, nutrition education and referrals to health care and other social services, at no cost, to 1) pregnant, breastfeeding and postpartum women, 2) infants, and 3) children up to age 5 who are at nutritional risk. WIC protects the health of women, infants and children during critical times of growth and development to prevent future medical and developmental problems. The WIC program of West Virginia is administered by the West Virginia Bureau for Public Health, Office of Nutrition Services, which is part of the Department of Health and Human Resources.

Program Requirements

In order to qualify for WIC, you must be: 1) a resident of the state of West Virginia; 2) a pregnant, breastfeeding or postpartum woman, or an infant or child under the age of 5; and 3) individually determined by a health professional to be at nutrition risk.

 

 

 

In order to qualify, you must have an annual household income (before taxes) that is below the following amounts:

*For households with more than eight people, add $7,696 per additional person. Always check with the appropriate managing agency to ensure the most accurate guidelines.

 

A person who participates or has family members who participate in certain other benefit programs, such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Medicaid or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), automatically meets the income eligibility requirement.
