The Illinois Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program provides temporary financial assistance for pregnant women and families with one or more dependent children. TANF provides financial assistance to help pay for food, shelter, utilities, and expenses other than medical.
In order to qualify for this benefit program, you must be a resident of Illinois, either pregnant or responsible for a child under 19 years of age, a U.S. national, citizen, legal alien, or permanent resident, have low or very low income, and be either under-employed (working for very low wages), unemployed or about to become unemployed.
A person may apply for TANF at a local office that serves the area where they live. Use the Illinois Department of Human Services (DHS) Office Locator to help find the nearest Family Community Resource Center.
